Enhance Your Silhouette with Breast Augmentation
Why do we love it?
Breast augmentation is a popular cosmetic procedure designed to enhance the size and shape of the breasts, creating a more proportionate and balanced appearance. This procedure involves the placement of implants to achieve the desired breast volume and contour. Whether you desire larger breasts, wish to correct asymmetry, or simply want to enhance your natural contours, breast augmentation can provide personalized results that complement your overall physique and aesthetic goals.
The procedure begins with a thorough consultation to discuss your goals and select the appropriate implant size, shape, and placement technique. Implants can be placed either above or below the chest muscle, depending on your anatomy and desired outcome. The surgery typically takes a few hours, and patients can expect to go home the same day.
Recovery from breast augmentation involves some swelling and discomfort, which usually subside within a few weeks. It's important to follow post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing and achieve the best results. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a week, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks.
One of the key advantages of breast augmentation is its ability to provide immediate and long-lasting results. Unlike padded bras or other temporary solutions, breast implants offer a permanent enhancement to the size and shape of the breasts. This procedure can significantly improve clothing fit and enhance your ability to wear a wider range of styles, further boosting your self-esteem and confidence.

Recovery for breast augmentations depends on the patient and the extensiveness of the procedure. However on average, recovery from a breast augmentation usually ranges between 2-4 weeks. You can expect bruising, soreness, temporary change in sensation and numbness following your breast augmentation procedure. Initially, breast implants will be placed higher than desired as over the 2-4 weeks of recovery, gravity will pull the implants down marginally into the desired location.
Dr. Hill uses implants from a variety of manufacturers including Sientra, Natrelle, and Mentor implants. These implants are all “gummy bear” implants. "Gummy bear" breast implants, also known as cohesive gel implants, are filled with a highly cohesive silicone gel. This gel is often referred to as "gummy bear" because of its consistency, which is similar to that of a gummy bear candy. The gel is thick and has the ability to maintain its shape, even when cut, which reduces the risk of gel leakage or migration in the event of a rupture. Cohesive gel implants are designed to provide a natural look and feel to the breast, as the gel closely resembles the density and texture of natural breast tissue. The benefit of this highly cohesive gel is that it can maintain its form, helping the implant retain its shape over time while reducing the risk of "rippling" or visible wrinkling that can sometimes occur with other types of breast implants.
Dr. Hill can also do fat grafting to the breasts without an implant. This enables Dr. Hill to add volume to the breasts without the use of an implant. Some patients who do not want implants prefer this method to allow an increase in breast size without the use of an implant. Dr. Hill can also combine fat grafting to the breasts with the addition of an implant. This combination can allow the implant to look more natural and provide more volume to the upper pole of the breast. The fat used for fat grafting to the breasts comes from doing liposuction to a different area of the body (legs, arms, abdomen, flanks, etc.)
Breast implants are safe. In the United States, breast implants are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Several types of breast implants are FDA-approved, including saline-filled implants and silicone gel-filled implants. These implants have undergone extensive testing and monitoring to assess their safety and effectiveness.
A significant impact or trauma to the chest area, such as a car accident or a direct blow to the breast, can cause the implant to rupture. This is a less common cause of rupture but is possible under certain circumstances. Implant aging can have an affect on the rupture rate as well. Over time, the silicone implant shell can weaken and become more susceptible to rupture. This is known as "shell fatigue" and can occur after many years of implant placement. The FDA recommends having imaging of the chest done 5-6 years after the initial breast augmentation, and then every 2-3 years after that. This is to ensure any issues with the implant are caught prior to a rupture.
Many women with breast implants are able to breastfeed successfully, but the ability to breastfeed can vary based on several factors, including the type of breast implants you have, the surgical technique used, and mainly, your individual anatomy.
Factors Affecting Breastfeeding with Implants:
Surgical Technique: The surgical approach used for breast augmentation can impact your ability to breastfeed. Techniques that involve incisions around the areola (periareolar incisions) may carry a slightly higher risk of affecting milk ducts and nerves.
Implant Placement: Implants placed beneath the chest muscle (submuscular placement) may have a lower risk of interfering with milk production and breastfeeding.
Nipple Sensation: If the surgery affects nipple sensation, it might impact the breastfeeding experience.
Individual Variation: Some women might experience changes in milk production due to the surgical procedure or individual factors.
Milk Supply: Regardless of implants, some women might have challenges with milk supply or breastfeeding due to factors unrelated to the surgery.
Breast implants are not typically required to be exchanged after a specific amount of time. However, it's important to understand that breast implants are not considered lifetime devices, and their longevity can vary. Some women may choose to have their implants exchanged or removed for various reasons, while others may keep their implants for many years without any issues.
There is ongoing debate and research regarding the potential link between breast implants and certain health conditions, often referred to as "breast implant illness." However, it's important to note that the relationship between breast implants and illness is complex and not fully understood. There is currently no scientific consensus on the existence of a direct causal relationship between breast implants and a specific set of symptoms. Some medical professionals and organizations argue that these symptoms could be attributed to a variety of factors unrelated to breast implants. Research on breast implant illness is ongoing, and studies have yielded mixed results. While some studies suggest a potential association between certain symptoms and breast implants, others have not found a clear link. It's important to recognize that individuals who undergo breast implant surgery might have pre-existing health conditions, lifestyle factors, or genetic predispositions that could contribute to the symptoms they experience.
Yes, you can choose the size of your breast implants, but it's important to approach this decision with careful consideration and guidance from a plastic surgeon, like Dr. Hill. Choosing the right implant size is a collaborative process between you and your surgeon to ensure that the size aligns with your aesthetic goals, body proportions, and overall health. We have sizers in-office that you can take a look at to see which size you feel is closest to your goal.
Surgical bras are designed to provide support and help with the healing process during the initial stages of recovery. A surgical bra provides support to the breasts and can help minimize movement during the early stages of healing. This can be especially helpful in reducing discomfort and promoting proper healing.Surgical bras often provide gentle compression, which can help control swelling and reduce the risk of complications such as hematoma (accumulation of blood) or seroma (accumulation of fluid).
A surgical bra can help stabilize the implants and promote proper positioning during the initial healing period.
Breast augmentation scars are strategically placed and tend to be well-hidden and relatively discrete over time. Some common types of incisions are inframammary, periareolar, transaxillary, and transumbilical incision. In the initial weeks and months after surgery, breast augmentation scars might appear reddish or pinkish and might be slightly raised. This is a natural part of the healing process.Over time, scars typically go through a maturation process. They become flatter, softer, and their color gradually fades.
The appearance of scars can vary based on factors such as genetics, skin type, and how well you follow post-operative care instructions.
Sleeping on your stomach could potentially put pressure on the breasts and implants, which might not be comfortable or conducive to proper healing during the initial stages. Sleeping on your stomach could increase the risk of implant displacement or migration. It's recommended to sleep on your back or in a slightly elevated position with pillows to minimize pressure on the surgical area for the first several weeks following surgery.
It is important to abide by post-operative instructions given by Dr. Hill to ensure proper healing. However, a rough general guideline for exercise following a breast augmentation is described below:
During the first 1-3 days following the procedure, light movement around the house should be enough “exercise” to prevent any issues with clotting. After the first 3 days, going on leisurely walks is both beneficial and essential to ensure proper healing and preventing blood clots. After about 7 days, you can re-introduce light exercise. This can include light cardio such as longer walks. Do not do anything that causes your chest to move up and down, or anything that puts pressure on your chest. After about 2 weeks, you may slowly begin introducing moderate exercise, with emphasis on lower body workouts. Typically after 6 weeks, you will be able to return to your normal exercise routine without restrictions.
