Liposuction in Chicago, IL | Precision Body Contouring
Why do we love it?
A surgical procedure to remove unwanted fat from various areas of the body (such as the abdomen, hips, thighs, and arms), liposuction is performed using a small tube inserted through a tiny incision, and can be combined with other procedures.
Body liposuction offers a versatile solution for individuals seeking to address localized areas of excess fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. This procedure involves the use of a small tube, called a cannula, which is inserted through tiny incisions in the skin to suction out unwanted fat deposits. By targeting specific areas of concern, body liposuction can sculpt and contour the body, creating a more streamlined and toned appearance. Additionally, body liposuction can be combined with other procedures such as tummy tuck or breast augmentation to achieve comprehensive body contouring results.

Vaser liposuction, laser-assisted liposuction, and power-assisted liposuction are three different techniques for performing liposuction, each with its own unique approach and technology.
Vaser Liposuction: Vaser liposuction uses ultrasound energy to break down and emulsify fat cells before they are removed. This is accomplished through a specialized probe that emits ultrasonic waves. Vaser liposuction is known for its ability to target fat cells while preserving surrounding tissues, which may result in smoother and more precise body contouring. It can also stimulate collagen production, potentially leading to skin tightening.
Laser-Assisted Liposuction: Laser-assisted liposuction, often performed with devices like SmartLipo or SlimLipo, uses laser energy to melt fat cells, making them easier to remove. The laser fiber is inserted through a thin cannula. Laser-assisted liposuction can enhance skin tightening due to the thermal effect of the laser. It is often chosen for small to medium-sized treatment areas such as the submentum. Dr. Hill often performs laser-assisted liposuction in-office under local anesthesia for smaller areas.
Power-assisted liposuction: Power-assisted liposuction uses a vibrating cannula to help break up fat cells and facilitate their removal. The cannula's back-and-forth movement is powered by a motor. This is the traditional method of liposuction. Power-assisted liposuction is known for its efficiency in fat removal and can be less physically demanding for the surgeon, potentially leading to a smoother and quicker procedure.
The timing for getting liposuction can vary depending on your individual circumstances and goals. It's essential to be at a relatively stable and healthy weight before undergoing liposuction. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure but rather a body contouring technique. Ideally, you should be within 10-20 pounds from your ideal weight. Many individuals choose to have liposuction during the off-season when they can take time off from work or activities to focus on recovery without the pressure of immediate social or professional obligations. Oftentimes, patients will elect to have liposuction during colder months, as a compression garment is required to be worn for several weeks following the procedure, and some patients find it a nuisance to wear during warmer months. Keep in mind that you'll need time for recovery and may need to avoid strenuous activities for a few weeks.
Pain and discomfort are common after liposuction, but the severity can vary from person to person and depends on several factors, including the extent of the procedure, the individual's pain tolerance. You will likely experience some pain, discomfort, and swelling in the treated areas immediately after liposuction. This is normal and is usually managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications written by Dr. Hill. Bruising and swelling are common side effects of liposuction and can contribute to discomfort. These symptoms typically peak within the first few days after surgery and gradually improve over several weeks. You will be instructed to wear a compression garment after liposuction. This garment helps reduce swelling, supports the healing process, and can minimize pain and discomfort.
The recovery for liposuction typically ranges between 4 and 6 weeks. You will likely experience soreness, bruising, and swelling during the initial few days following surgery, however, these symptoms will gradually decrease over the first 2-3 weeks. Patients commonly elect to avoid intense working out/activity for the first 5-7 days following the procedure. You are able to resume light activity, such as walking, about 1-3 days after surgery, but some patients choose to resume later or earlier depending on their personal level of soreness. It is important to avoid any activities that induce straining in the areas of the incision sites. This raises the risk of incisions dehiscing and requiring re-suturing, thus prolonging healing and down time.
Liposuction is considered a safe and effective cosmetic procedure when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon like Dr. Hill. However, as with all surgical procedures, there is some risk associated with liposuction. This includes but is not limited to: infection, bruising, swelling, irregularities and asymmetry, fluid accumulation, numbness of changes in sensation, skin irregularities and dimpling, and scarring.
Liposuction is not intended for significant weight loss. While it can remove localized fat deposits and improve body contours, it is not a substitute for traditional weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. Liposuction is primarily a cosmetic procedure used to enhance body shape and contour by targeting areas of stubborn fat that do not respond well to diet and exercise.
Liposuction can improve skin tightness to some extent, but it's not a primary skin-tightening procedure. It's more effective for removing excess fat. Skin tightening can vary depending on factors like skin elasticity and the amount of fat removed. Liposuction is often combined with Renuvion, which is a device created with the intent to tighten skin. During your consultation, be sure to mention that you are interested in skin tightening as well as contouring, and Dr. Hill will advise you on the best method to achieve this considering your specific area(s) of concern.
Liposuction can be used to treat multiple areas simultaneously, such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs, buttocks, and arms. Combining areas can offer comprehensive body contouring and can be more cost-effective than separate procedures.
Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from the treated areas. Once these fat cells are suctioned out, they do not grow back. This means that the physical volume of fat in the treated areas has been reduced permanently. While the fat cells removed during liposuction do not return, it's important to maintain a stable weight after the procedure. Significant weight gain can result in an increase in the size of remaining fat cells throughout the body, potentially leading to changes in body contour. As you age, your body's metabolism and fat distribution may change, which can affect the long-term appearance of the treated areas. However, the fat cells removed during liposuction will not return.
